This painting is about a pagan icon, something ancient and sacred that existed long before Christianity took over. For me, it represents a time when the divine was found in nature, in the earth, in the body, and not inside church walls.
I called it The Profane Icon because that’s what it was turned into. It wasn’t unholy to begin with. It was called that by a religion that needed to replace what came before. This figure was once worshipped, respected, connected to the rhythm of life. Then it was renamed, demonized, and forgotten.
This work is my way of reclaiming that lost spirit. It’s about what happens when something sacred is twisted into something shameful. But it’s also about endurance. Even if the world forgets, the icon still exists. Quiet, powerful, and untouched at its core.
